Get Noticed 12th September 2005 The www.doyourownpr.com newsletter
Okay, before we start I'd better inform you of a change of contact details. The new Do Your Own PR office number is now 0208 504 4557, and the address is: 10 Oak Hill Gardens, Woodford Green, Essex, IG8 9DY. It's a new area for me so if there are any Woodford Green locals out there do get in touch.
With a new term feeling most definitely in the air this week's PR tip is going to sound a bit like an English lesson! I'm going to talk about the importance of not forgetting to spend time on making sure your press release sounds good which can be just as valuable as good content in the battle to get your press release read.
There are two parts to this. The first is concentrating on the sound of the words that you put into your release - and most importantly your first paragraph. For instance, glossy women's magazines love words like "sassy, sexy, sophisticated, sultry" - put them altogether and you have something that trips off the tongue and just invites you to read on.
Remember Onomatopoeia? It's when a word sounds like the action or noun it represents - like screech or sigh for instance. Bringing techniques like this into your press release can help add atmosphere and interest. Consider this sentence from a press release for a day spa "the only sounds you'll hear are the soft hum of our peaceful tropical fish tank and the hushed whispers of our guides as they gently lead you towards your waiting treatment room." Get in the habit of reading your press releases aloud (indeed it's a good habit for any material that you put together) to check that they entice the reader to carry on and find out more.
Next week I'll be talking about the second way that you can use words to make your release more attention grabbing.
SORT OUT YOUR PR!
Yep, it's Autumn again and that "new term" feeling has got more than a few people thinking that they need to seriously up their PR game. I've been running my 30 day PR ecourses for over 3 years, helping hundreds of business owners get into the press. Success stories include clients who have been featured in national glossies such as Red and Eve, television air-time in the form of a CNN breakfast spot, and one client who now has a regular column in a bi-monthly health and beauty publication. While their success has been down to their own enthusiasm, hard work and energy, they've had to get to grips with how PR works to go about getting that success. And this is where the 30 day Do Your Own PR ecourse can help. It takes you, step by step, through a PR campaign, and I'm with you all the way - answering your questions and helping you apply the course to your own business.
We begin with an intense look at your business - what makes it attractive to the press, and what you can do to make it more appealing. We also look at your target market and the publications and media outlets that you've got to approach to reach them, and put together a plan to make that happen. After reviewing your notes and comments about your business I then come up with some practical tactics and activities that you can put into action - totally individual and written for you and your business.
I then show you how to put together a press release and help you to write your own, editing and reviewing what you put together, and suggesting possible press to send it to. You're also shown the secrets of how to give good interviews - vital when you start getting that press - and learn about PR boosters that will enhance your PR and marketing activities, and help you attract those all important clients.

" Nicola Cairncross at www.nicolacairncross.com CLIENT NEWS Garden Home office company Inside Out Buildings (http://www.iobuild.co.uk/ ) are having an article on them in the Jan 2006 edition of Artists and Illustrators and have also been asked to contribute an article to the Institute of Consumer Science.
AND FINALLY..
You haven't heard much from me this summer because, well, frankly all I've been doing is packing and unpacking. Having passed over the idea of paying someone to do this for me in the hope that it would turn out a great chance to de-clutter, I , of course, just ended up chucking everything into the nearest handy box and the result was chaos.
Still, we're all unpacked now and the next project is painting my office which, at the moment, is a lovely shade of dark red. I feel as though I'm working in the Adams Family mansion.
Apart from that though the new place is absolutely fab - as I type this there's a squirrel on the patio deciding whether to climb up the ivy or the tree, and my husband's rigged up the amp and dug out his bachelor day speakers so I've got James Blount in surround sound - bliss!
Until next time, Paula Gardner www.doyourownpr.com 0208 504 4557.
"The Do Your Own PR e-course is a brilliant in terms of both content and delivery. It's delivered in a way that is easy to digest, understand and action and teaches you all you need to know to get yourself noticed by the right people at the right time. Brilliant!"
