Mel McGee and Supermummy
|
My final PR spotlight of 2009 falls on Mel McGee of http://supermummy.com , a member of my Divine Publicity Club. I've been impressed with the way that Mel has built her brand so quickly. She is a natural PR.
Mel, tell us about your business and your books Supermummy is an online business success coaching service for mums. Through my website I offer mums wanting to start a flexible business from home the ultimate resource. Mums can join the Supermummy Mumpreneurs social network for free, join my Mastermind monthly coaching program and buy a step by step home study course. My first book "Supermummy: The Ultimate Mumpreneurs Guide To Online Business Success" is a practical guide and my next book "Millionaire Mumpreneurs" is a combination of strategies and case studies and is launching on 1st March 2010.
How much time do you spend on PR?
Consistently. I mostly broadcast myself through social media. What PR activities have you found that work for you? I have got magazine, newspaper and radio coverage about my book launch and have written articles for various websites. Social media and leading my own social network have helped me to maintain consistent visibility.
What do you enjoy least about PR?
'Traditional' PR is very time consuming when you are starting out with no contacts. I'd rather delegate that to an expert now.
What's been your highest point so far PR-wise?
Being the presenter's special guest for a 2 hour breakfast radio show and having a double page spread in a magazine.
And your lowest? A newspaper article that didn't mention the title of my book or website address! And social networking...do you do this and how useful have you found it? (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc) Social media has really helped me to grow my business from home and connect with mumpreneurs and colleagues all over the world. My favourite sites are Twitter, Facebook and of course my own mumpreneur network http://www.supermummymumpreneurs.com.
I don't expect to get new clients directly from posting on social media but telling my followers what's happening in my business and life has resulted in traffic and referrals. I've also been able to connect with inspirational role models and plan joint ventures through social media.
What have you learnt about PR?
Put yourself in the position of the media, you have to have a newsworthy story, stand out and make their job easier! Can you link a rise in turn over with PR? Yes and no. I've been disappointed with the lack of response to some of the magazine and radio coverage and delighted with the response through social networking.
What advice do you have to give to someone starting to do their own PR?
Don't wait for the media to give you the visibility you need. Get yourself a profile on social media and commit to little and often to maintain momentum. When you need to step it up and approach the traditional media outsource to a PR professional.
What did you find helpful about your work with Do Your Own PR? Paula really helped me to understand the media and think about my hook when I was first starting out. Her Do Your Own PR service is a great resource for any business with little or no PR budget and can really help you save time and money trying to figure it all out yourself.
